Sufi Women

Sufism is inner, mystical dimension of Islam.  Whirling, dhikr (a practice of repeating the names of God) and asceticism are among the practices of Sufism. Neither the idea of Sufism nor its practices are gender specific. However, when it comes to visual representation, there is a significant male dominance.

With this photo essay, I looked at the place of women in Sufism, therefore in Islam, in terms of intertwined ideas of physical and mental practices, the idea of Allah, obedience in God and men.
